Coaching Approaches
There are five major approaches to coaching employees. They are:
- Role Modeling: “Do as I do”
- Instructing: “Do as I say”
- Performance Pointing: “Do it at this level”
- Problem Solving: “Let’s find a solution”
- Motivating: “You can do it!”
Drawing on the five approaches above, determine which coaching approach is most appropriate for the scenarios below.
Scenario 1
A senior Project Manager has been in his position for over 10 years and can do the job in his sleep. He is showing sings of disinterest and apathy. Best approach?
Scenario 2
A college intern has been tasked with collating and filing important files related to past closed out projects. Best approach?
Scenario 3
A Project Manager from another division will be spending two weeks in your division as part of their developmental progress toward becoming a senior PM. Best approach?
Scenario 4
The federal government has implemented a new quality program and, as such, set forth new billing requirements that have to be adhered to in order to get paid. Project Managers will have to abide by these requirements to meet project budgets. Best approach?
Scenario 5
A respected Division Manager has been asked to launch a new division, which will deal exclusively with emerging markets, such as windmill farms. As uncharted territory for your organization, the DM seeks your ideas and input for making the launch successful. Best approach?
